Welcome to the 2023 Fall Advanced Sport Massage Course

OVERALL PURPOSE OF COURSE

This course is ideal for Massage Therapists who would like to improve their knowledge and skills of working with athletes in any environment.  It will provide participants with Sport Massage theory and practical techniques that can be utilized at sporting events, with athletic teams, or in their own clinic setting. The knowledge and practical experience that participants will gain would be of great benefit for anyone working with athletes at any level including those who will be working with athletes at any Major Games or Olympic Games.

  • Pre, inter, and post-event massage- theory and techniques
  • Event Coverage Protocol
  • Anatomical and Physiological considerations
  • Psychological Considerations
  • Sport Specific Approaches
  • Special Circumstances and Applications of Sport Massage techniques in a variety of situations
  • Role of a Sport Massage Therapist
  • Sport Massage in Canada

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The participants will gain:

  • An appreciation for the value of Sport Massage and its similarities or differences to classical massage
  • A competency in several basic massage techniques: Compressions, cross-fibre massage, jostling, effleurage and petrissage.
  • A competency in the theory and techniques of pre-event, post-event and inter-event Sport Massage.
  • An effective protocol when covering an athletic event.
  • A quick and concise method of gathering useful information to make the Sport Massage session more efficient.
  • An understanding of the specific indications and contraindications for a variety of Sport Massage circumstances.
  • An understanding of the physiological and psychological effects of Sport Massage.
  • The ability to provide the athletes of the sports with an excellent quality of massage

  • Registered Massage Therapist since 1995, CSMTA (SF) since 2000, CSMTA Certification and Examination Chair since 2009, Instructor for the CSMTA Advanced Sport Massage Course since 2010, and CSMTA Instructor Coordinator since 2018.
  • High-Performance Advisory Council Therapy Lead for Own The Podium.
  • Member of the Integrated Support Team (IST) for Athletics Canada since 2010 where he supports athletes in their Daily Training Environment (DTE) as well as has supported athletes at: 2020 Summer Paralympics, 2016 Summer Olympic game, 4 Para World Championships, Senior and Junior IAAF World Championships, Pan Am and 2 Parapan Am Games.
  • Member of the IST for Swim Canada since 2014 where he supports athletes in their DTE as well as he has supported athletes at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2023 Pan Am Games.
  • Member of the IST for Cycling Canada (Track Cycling) since 2015 where he supports athletes in their DTE as well as he supported athletes at the 2020 Summer Olympics and UCI 2019 World Track Cycling Championships.
  • Member of the Canadian Core Medical Team, Remo has gone to:
    2006 Winter Olympics, 2004 Summer Paralympics, 2003 Summer World University Games, and 2001 Summer Canada Games.
  • Remo works at Canadian Sport Institute Ontario since 2014 as part of the Sport Medicine and Sport Therapy Team as well as Safe Sport Chair.
  • Remo has taught Massage Therapy for 17 years. He focused his teaching in Treatments, Assessment, Remedial Exercise, and Anatomy. He incorporates what he has taught into his treatment sessions along with Osteopathic techniques, Active Isolated Stretching, IASTM, Cupping, Performance taping, and Thai Massage.

 

Mike Grafstein

Mike Grafstein

RMT, CSMTA (SF), CAT( C ), CMRP, C.Ht.

Mike worked for over 25 years as the Head Therapist at the provincial and Private Academy level with soccer traveling to Europe with many Soccer teams.

Between 2012 and 2020 Mike served on both the CSMTA and CSMTA Ontario Boards in several positions.

He provided Massage Therapy as part of the Core Canadian Medical Team for the 2019 World University in Italy and an alternate for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Mike has worked with many national, provincial and Olympic Athletes and is the Massage Therapist for Swim Ontario.

Mike works out of two clinics in York Region providing therapy to a wide of clients using multiple gentle touch therapies like Matrix Repatterning, Craniosacral Therapy and Visceral Manipulation along with Sport Massage.

Mike loves Zenning out with hikes in many of the York Region Forest Tracts with his wife
