Established in 1987, the Canadian Sport Massage Therapists Association (CSMTA) is the only certifying body for Sport Massage in Canada. The CSMTA is a not-for-profit organization that established professional standards in the industry, provides leadership and education in the specialty of Sport Massage. The CSMTA serves the Canadian athletic community at all levels, and aims to serve grassroots community athletics all the way to provincial, national, and international sport.

The CSMTA offers opportunity to work at high levels of sport around the country. Our signature courses, available online, enable sport massage therapists to continue their professional development. There are many opportunities for networking and mentorship with sport industry professionals via numerous events organized by the CSMTA. Lastly, there are many opportunities to volunteer at the chapter or national level, or at various sporting events at the grassroots level.
Sport Massage is the application of specific massage techniques to an athlete with the purpose of enhancing the athlete’s preparation for, or recovery from, the physical demands of training or competition.

CSMTA members are professionally trained to treat athletes from grassroots to Olympic and professional levels. CSMTA members specialize in specific techniques for pre-event, inter-event, post-event, and restorative/training massage.

The CSMTA has 4 specific levels of membership – Student, Certification Candidate, Certified (C)-Reserved, and Inactive. The CSMTA’s membership year is January 1 to December 31. The renewal deadline is yearly on December 1. Everyone initially joins as either a Certification Candidate or Student, and current members will be sent a renewal notice directly to them in the fall.
